Episode 23 - Happy Vern Day Chick Corea vs. Anonymous

In the episode, we celebrate Vernon's birthday the Field Negro way—turning on the mics and talking about whatever comes to mind. After wandering off from a conversation about 'Mad Men' ripoffs, Vern takes us through a primer on modern Jazz Fusion and tell war stories about his recent battle with several raccoons. Yes, raccoons.

There's plenty of music to be found in this episode, but Vernon touches on so many different artists that it would be hard to fit it all in. Make sure to drop by FNGTAC.com soon after this episode goes up to get more info on the songs featured in this episode and the other songs and artists that are discussed.

Last but not least, as always, you can find us at the other usual internet gathering spots:

Could recent events in the U.K. happen in America as well? Was Steve Harvey right to call Tavis Smiley and Cornell West "Uncle Toms?" What do the lastest developments in U.S. financial markets really mean for everyday people? Why ya'll hatin' on Black Spider-Man? This week, Vernon and Kamau tackle all these issues and more in the way that only they can.

The big news keeps rolling in faster than we can talk about it all, so we're back again this week with a super-sized episode. Vernon and Kamau start out discussing the recent tragic events in Norway and the loss of two of our favorite artists, but luckily there have been some positive developments as well, including Vernon recently showing up on WWE Monday Night Raw and of course, the final "Harry Potter" film.

While you're listening, stop by FNGTAC.com for additional bits of media and commentary, or find us in the usual internet watering holes:

This week, the Field Negros discuss their favorite topics—comic book movies and disgraced public figures. Lucky for them, there have been plenty of both lately and the train looks like it's gonna keep on rolling.

This week Vernon & Kamau intend to celebrate NY state legalizing of gay marriage. But along the way Kamau has to get all "San Francisco Bay Area" on Vernon and explain all the new extra letters at the end of LGBT... It leads to a discussion about human sexuality past, present and future. Vernon's confused but whatEVER!

If there is any artist who personifies what Vernon and Kamau are thinking when they use the term "field negro" it is Gil Scott-Heron. Gil Scott-Heron passed away May 27, 2011 and left us a legacy of some of the most powerful and legendary political and heartfelt music that the world has ever seen. Clearly there are strains of Gil Scott-Heron in Chuck D, Zack de la Rocha, Boots Riley, Common, Michael Franti, Guru, Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Saul Williams and many others. On this episode Vernon and Kamau spend most of the hour discussing Gil's impact on the world, on music and his struggles with addiction. And towards the end, Kamau spends a few minutes talking about how much his life has been profoundly changed recently by the addition of the latest field negro, his newborn daughter.

We’re already back with another episode ---- though it is Vernon free. This time for an interview with Friend of the Show Baron Vaughn. In addition to being an incredibly funny comedian, Baron also appears weekly on USA’s Fairly Legal (which was recently renewed for its second season). He and Kamau discuss his career and comedy and theatre and sociology and hats and all the fascinating, hilarious things that comics discuss when you put them in the same room.

On a related note, you’ll soon be able to hear a lot more of Baron discussing hilarious things with fellow comics Moshe Kasher and Ali Wong. Producer Alex recently recorded them for the first hour of what will be their own podcast, featuring the trio talking about life and love interspersed with a lot of improvisational music breaks. We’ll be sure to update you soon with the details on that, of course.

Meanwhile, if you’re in the Los Angeles area, make sure you stop by UCB to see him record material for his upcoming album this Thursday, May 26th. You can make reservations at their website for a mere $5, which is far less than you should be paying to see Baron and Kumail Nanjiani anyway. How could you say no?

Vernon is away this week and he's sure gonna be mad he missed this one. Kamau is in Portland, OR and sits down with scorching hot comedian, Hannibal Buress. Hannibal has been feted in all the hip-making mags like Rolling Stone, Esquire, Variety, and Entertainment Weekly. And he has been called, "The funniest young comic I've seen in years." by none other than Chris Rock. Kamau and Hannibal have some comedian shoptalk, talk about Hannibal's brief writing career on Saturday Night Live and his hopefully soon to be longer writing career on 30 Rock. And in the grand tradition of FNGTAC they of course have a meta discussion about Hannibal's self-esteem and whether or not he's being type cast. Hannibal also breaks a brand new genre or YouTube vdeos. Watch out MMA!

Enjoy it! Even though we don't know if you deserve it!
